Maggie is a pianist, vocalist, songwriter, and Berklee College of Music graduate with a deep love for helping students discover their own musical voice. Drawing from her background in classical piano, songwriting, and music therapy environments, she brings a thoughtful, nurturing approach to teaching piano, voice, guitar, and songwriting. I teach private songwriting lessons that help students learn how to listen, understand, and dissect their favorite music, and use their findings to create songs of their own. In earlier stages the focus will be more on songwriting education and as understanding increases, it will shift to more workshop style feedback. In addition to songwriting, I teach lessons in beginner's piano, guitar, and voice, covering the basics of reading music, playing techniques and styles, as well as learning to use your instrument(s) as a tool in composition.
Sharing the tool of music with the next generation is the most fulfilling thing I can do. The transformative healing powers of music have brought me gifts beyond measure and the least I can do is pass it along.
I have been a classical pianist for 13 years, a songwriter for 10, a guitarist for 9, and a vocalist since I could talk. I honed my musical crafts during my 4 years of intensive study at Berklee College of Music and exercised my teaching muscles during those years as well. I am constantly evolving as a musician and writer as I learn more about myself and the world around me. I find inspiration through discovering new music and collaborating with artists of all forms.
I teach in a highly individualized fashion, taking time to get to know each student: their personalities, dreams, and what motivates them. I tailor lessons and teaching styles to the need of the student, choosing my teaching tools carefully. As someone with experience in the realm of mental health as well as clinical music therapy environments, I am well equipped to meet the needs of a more sensitive client, leaning on the soothing and healing tools of music throughout the learning process. For more driven students, I will meet their excitement with more structure, goal-based learning and deadlines. I deeply believe that the same approach does not work for every student and care must be taken with learning their needs.
Community is the biggest element that keeps my fire alight. Sharing excitement with students through their own discoveries, collaborating with fellow musicians and creatives, and bonding with listeners through the music that I myself write; these are just a few things that keep me grounded in my passion. Sharing important messages through art is the key to connection and fulfillment for me.
