Class Description

Light, Shadow, Object, is a four-week observational drawing workshop centered around a series of carefully staged still life environments. Each week, students will draw from richly composed arrangements featuring dramatic lighting, unexpected objects, and thoughtfully constructed relationships between form, texture, and space.

Through sustained observation and guided exercises, participants will develop foundational drawing skills including proportion, value, composition, and mark-making. Together, we'll explore how light describes form, how shadow creates atmosphere, and how attentive looking can transform ordinary objects into compelling subjects.

Open to all experience levels, this class invites students to slow down, sharpen their perception, and engage deeply with the visual world. No prior drawing experience is necessary—only curiosity and a willingness to look closely.

Charcoal and newspaper print will be provided but students are encouraged to B.Y.O.M. (bring your own medium: guache, pastels, graphite, etc.)

Enrollment
One session includes four weekly group classes. Enrolling in a session means committing to the four weeks of classes, creating continuity for both you and the group.

Liz

Liz is an interdisciplinary artist and educator whose work spans sculpture, video, installation and experimental media. Her practice is rooted in material experimentation, collaboration, and conceptual inquiry. Drawing on her MFA in Art & Technology from the California Institute of the Arts, Liz approaches teaching as a non-hierarchical process centered on curiosity, intuition and creative risk-taking rather than technical perfection. Her lessons are supportive and discussion-based where students are encouraged to trust their instincts, embrace experimentation and explore new ways of thinking and making without fear of judgment. Through meditative exercises, open dialogue and collaborative learning, Liz creates spaces that encourage vulnerability, play and the unique authenticity of every student’s creative voice.
