DJ Lessons with Mars

Mars finds love in the low end, offering up sub-heavy dancefloor shakers for bass-heads and newcomers alike. Drawing inspiration from British bass music history, the LA producer & DJ subverts the genre, using elements of bass wobbles and breaks to create batucada, 2step, and taiko rhythms. She has released with notable Bay Area label No Bias, and played alongside Jamie XX, The Dare, Doss, INVT, Anna Morgan, Bianca Oblivion, and Sybil.

What do you teach?

Students learn DJ equipment basics, music fundamentals like beatmatching, adjusting track speeds for smooth transitions, and understanding music keys and harmonic mixing, as well as mixing techniques. We may also cover soft skills of music library development, dance music culture and community building, and dance music history.

What makes you want to share your skills and knowledge?

I feel very affirmed and empowered by the art form of DJing to share music with Los Angeles, especially sounds and textures that many in this city are unfamiliar with. My hope is to empower other young DJs to be able to share sounds that authentically move them with our wider community.

What is your experience in your craft and how are you evolving?

After a 3 year casual learning period, I have been DJing for about 2 years now, and it has been a whirlwind. I am very pleased with the career success I have garnered in this time with my DJing and music releases. In the coming years, my hope is to dive even deeper into the unique sound of Latin-dance-infused UK bass music I have been developing and continue bringing this sound to my city of LA and beyond in other dance markets.

What’s your style of teaching?

My style of teaching is very hands on. I believe that students learn best when given the instrument (CDJs) to play with and allowing them to freely roam and discover the many knobs and effects. With some guidance around technique and procedure on beat-matching, harmonic mixing, and phrasing, students will demystify CDJs, learning them just as any other large instrument, like a piano or guitar.

What keeps you creatively inspired?

Always: Mambos, salsas, sambas. Dancing with my mom. Wobble bass. Cuica. Syncopation. Call and response. The people on the dance floor.

Right now: El-B, early Tempa and Deep Medi records. ML Buch. The spring rolling in.

Testimonials

I took a DJ class here for two months with Mars. Really enjoyed it and hope to return again. The space felt really inclusive and approachable. Mars was fun and did a great job explaining things in a way that was practical and clear but also detailed / contextual. She had a natural way of teaching to everyone’s level. I hope to take more classes here — the programs seem very thoughtfully coordinated.
