Experimental Drawing 2: Beyond Observation

Through a series of structured prompts, material investigations, collaborative exercises, and discussions of contemporary artists, students will deepen their understanding of drawing as a conceptual, spatial, and process-based medium. This course emphasizes risk-taking, experimentation, and the development of an individual visual language. Students will work across abstraction, memory, chance operations, and mark-making systems while receiving individualized feedback and participating in group discussions.
Week 1: Systems, Constraints, and Chance
Using rule-based approaches and generative exercises, students will explore how limitations can open unexpected creative possibilities.
Week 2: Memory, Mapping, and Personal Narrative
Drawing from memory, intuition, and lived experience, students will develop visual languages that move beyond direct observation.
Week 3: Expanded Drawing
Students will investigate collage, installation, unconventional materials, and drawing as a spatial practice.
Week 4: Project Development
Students will synthesize techniques and concepts from the course into a final experimental drawing project, culminating in a group discussion and reflection on future directions for their practice.
This class takes place at Ari's art studio in Downtown LA.
